A Cosmic Performer

Bharatanatyam is a creation of a male God Cosmic Performer Raghunath Manet

Although Bharatanatyam is a creation of a male God, the Cosmic Lord Natraja, there is a dearth of accomplished male dancers tn India. It is a matter of great pride and delight for the people of Pondicherry that Raghunath Manet, a Pondicherry born and Paris based dancer is winning accolades for his beautiful performances.

Another interesting feature is his Veena play. It is a rare accomplice - dance and veena. A product of Kalakshetra and tramed by M.S.Nathan, Manet has been quoted as the Inchan Rudoiph Moravia by Asian Pages.

Infact, he has inherited the rich forms of Dance and Music from bis grandfather, Gnanamani Pillai who was a farnous violinist. Manet has learnt veena from him and Rajeswari. His Bharatanatyam Gurus are 'N S.Nathan and Ram Gopal who is settled in London He bas given many performance in India and abroad and represents the Indian male dancer At present, Manet is doing bis Doctorate in Anthropology from Paris University RECENTLY HIS DANCES WERE TELECASTED BY THE FRENCH CHANNEL ALL OVER THE WORLD. News Pondicherry had an opportunity to speak to the 'Pride, of Pondicherry'.

Excerpts from has interview

NP : When did you start your format training in dance?
RM : Right from my childhood, probably, when I was 5 years old.
NP : Where and from whom did you learn dance?
RM : My Bharatanatyam Guru are N.S. Nathan from Pondicherry and Ram Gopal from London. I got my formal dance training at Kalakshetra. Sorne film stars like Mala and Sukanya learnt dance along with me at Kalakshetra.
NP : Who is your favounte dance?
RM : My favourite dancer is Ram Gopal who is settled in London He is an ideal classical dance.
NP : Which section of Bharatanatyam interests you most?
RM : I am very much interested in Shiva Themes.
NP : Besicles Veena and Bharatanatyam, what else fascinates you?
RM : I have learnt western music, guitar. Pute etc but it the Indian Music winch has fascinated me most.
NP : Your inspiration?
RM : Main source of my inspiration is magnificent Indian Temples whcre you can sec Lord Shiva in different dancing forms. People of my country and the rich culture of my country have also inspired me.
NP : In how many countrie have you performed?
RM : I have performed Paris (France), Hong Kong. Germany, Australta. Switzerland, England, Italy. Austna, Snlanka, Africa, USA. etc.
NP : Have you published book?
RM : I have published 2 book in French, "Les Besdères" The English version of this book will be shortly avallable in the market I am planning to publish second book on Indian Music.
NP : You have beet presenting your programmes allover world. But Pondyites have never got the opportunity, to see your performance. Why?
RM : Now-a-days Indians are more interested in western music. People feel bored by Bharatanatyam and therefore am introducing new interesting steps in Bharatanatyam which I am sure, will attract more people.
NP : Any plans for future?
RM : I would like to open dance school in Pondicherry for men only. I would also like to organise a dance festival in Pondicherry like one was held in Madras.
